“We regret the haste.” Alina met her gaze steadily. “Then leave.” Elowen smiled thinly. “We cannot.” Cael shifted half a step forward. Elowen’s eyes flicked to him. “Captain.” He did not answer. The clerics moved past Elowen and toward the center of the sanctuary, where a low stone table had been hastily cleared. One of them carried a covered object wrapped in thick cloth. Alina’s chest tightened. The Crown. Not the symbol the court liked to display, polished and framed by banners, but the true thing. The Ember Crown, modest and unassuming, dangerous precisely because it refused spectacle.

Long Chen said calmly, looking at the man. "Hahaha, indeed, I am not you. I am the one called the Dragon Emperor, and I am the Dragon God who stands equal among the gods. My name is Long Jinzi. He kneels slightly, adjusting the veil with careful movements. “Is this truly what you want, Isabella?” His voice is steady, but underneath, I hear the tremor of worry. “I know Aurelia has been kind. A few moments after the Chiefs entered, his father's arrival was announced by the royal herald. The Herald declared, stamping his heavy staff on the hardwood floor. The emperor entered the chambers looking as regal and tall as ever despite being well into his fifties. He sat down at the head of the table and nodded his head; a signal that meant he had accepted their greeting and they could all sit down. Before the emperor could speak, Daegal immediately got a word in. "Chief Davit, what is the situation of the riots in Alsayf? Are they getting better

The door closed behind him with a quiet click. Aziel looked at me, one eyebrow raised. “That was sudden.” I walked around the desk and pulled him into my arms. “I needed you alone.” He smiled against my chest. “Jealous, Emperor?” “Terribly.” He laughed softly. The sound eased the jealousy almost instantly. I tilted his chin up and kissed him. Slow, deep and claiming. He was mine. When we parted, I rested my forehead against his. “Stay with me today.” He nodded. “I’m not going anywhere.”

“Wynne, you are seriously insane.” “Uh, thanks.” “The Dragon Emperor didn’t kill you?” “Not yet. He just left two bodyguards downstairs to keep an eye on me.” She sucked in a sharp breath. “I’m coming back early!” “No, no, it’s fine. I can handle it… I think.” I hung up, still thinking about the whole situation, when the doorbell rang. Outside stood a man in a black suit, with two attendants behind him carrying large bags. “Ms. Lane, I am a steward of the Vale family. I’ve been ordered by the Dragon Emperor to deliver some items.”

Elara watched the city breathe from the penthouse window. Night lights blinked like promises that never kept. The room smelled of lemon and old perfume. Glass and steel held everything together up here. It fit Adrian—clean, sharp, cold. He came in without knocking. He moved like a man used to being obeyed.
