Watching Tomozaki, with his analytical gamer brain, try to reverse-engineer charisma and friendship is equal parts cringe, hilarious, and surprisingly insightful. It’s less about romance (though there are threads) and more about the grindy, awkward process of leveling up your own personality.

The novels delve way deeper into his internal monologue than the anime could. You get his raw frustration when a ‘mission’ fails, his over-analysis of every social cue, and the slow, genuine victories when he connects with someone like the quirky Fuuka Kikuchi. The plot thickens as he starts questioning Hinami’s own ‘perfect player’ philosophy, wondering if her methods are stripping away his authenticity. Does winning at life mean becoming someone else? That’s the central tension that carries the series forward past the initial training arc.
