For a moment, it looked like she might actually escape. I bit down on my tongue until it bled and spat the blood onto Lilian. "I can't take this anymore. If we keep running, I'll die." After hearing my words, Lilian stopped in her tracks. She scanned the surroundings, spotted an abandoned coffin nearby, and climbed inside with me. After a while, I heard the police closing in on us. I deliberately made a noise. "Lilian, it hurts." Lilian stared at me in disbelief, never expecting me to reveal ourselves on purpose. Yet at that critical moment, she simply lowered her head and kissed me. "Honey, you'll be fine."

I tease as she gets into position across from me. “No promises,” Kyla chirps, grinning as she prepares to launch herself at me. She does, and I fend her off easily, employing the left block maneuver that Fallon demonstrated earlier. Like I said, the moves she taught us are pretty basic. Thankfully, I don’t take an elbow to the face this time, though Kyla lets out a little grunt of frustration when I knock her onto her butt. “Very good,” Jax mumbles from behind me. For a second I forgot he was even there- which seems impossible when I spin to face him and he gives me a little smirk that makes me go weak in the knees.

I covered my mouth, this was really shocking. Imogen and Azeez, I shook my head and turned back quietly. ***** I was having fun chatting with Jamaal. Avery’s POV “Just stay put I'm coming to get you then we can go together, I don't like the idea of you walking around on your own Babe!” Jamal said, sounding so worried. Giggling I replied, “I will be fine my love, it's just the mall two blocks away from my studio. I'm craving Cheetos and chips, it's not my fault the baby can’t wait for you to drive all the way from the other end of the city to the studio.”

Jamal shouted "Don't you ever talk about her like that." A gun clicked. The cacophony sent a chill of fright down me but Jamal didn't step back from me. She smiled, holding out her hand which I grabbed, heaving up abd wincing "That's the second time you are getting the shit kicked out of you in the last couple of weeks." I shrugged, "I am starting to get used to it." As we reached out apartment once again, the weight of the past seemed a little lighter. The door closed behind us, shutting out the noise of the city, and we stood in the quiet space. As I bade her goodnight, limping to my room, I heard her call out, "Now we are even." Jamal's POV I stepped out of the car, squinting into the darkness, the cool evening breeze blowing across my face. He stood there alright, staring across the river, his hands clasped behind his back

Jamal’s laughter echoed as he ran toward Damian, his little legs moving as fast as they could carry him. “Uncle Damian!” he called out, his voice filled with joy that made the tension in the air feel momentarily lighter. Damian crouched just in time to catch him, lifting Jamal effortlessly, ruffling his curly hair with a playful smile. “There’s my Superman!” Damian grinned, holding the boy close. “How was the party, champ?” Jamal beamed, his excitement bubbling over. “The party was really great, Uncle Damian! I swam and ate lots of candies!” His voice dropped suddenly, his smile fading as he looked down. “But... I made Mommy cry.”

I glanced at the emergency exit door and counted the seconds as I urged my idiot brother, "Come on. Are you done thinking? This apartment is only 30% occupied. If I'm dead, no one else is coming to save you." Then the stairwell door opened. Teddy stuck his head out, spotted me, and smiled. "There you are." My heart lurched. He walked toward me, one step, then two, then three, his smile stretching wider until it resembled a maw. At last, the door behind me opened. I felt the rush of air against my back and threw myself inside, landing hard on the floor. Chad slammed the door shut and locked it while I struggled to catch my breath.
