Not a single word. Kyo stepped forward, his tone shifting into one of quiet menace. “Speak,” Kyo said quietly, his eyes narrowing at James. “Tell us what happened between you and her mother. We want to understand NYX’s situation. The truth. Her past. Her life with her mother.” But James scoffed, the sound bitter. “There’s nothing to explain,” he said. “Is that why you dragged me here like a prisoner? To talk about a woman who’s long dead?”

His voice was disturbingly calm, more frightening than any outburst of rage. “I warned you not to touch her. I gave you a chance.” “So what?!” Zinnia’s eyes were filled with twisted hatred. “She’s a cheap whore who stole you from me! She ruined my life! If I can’t have you, no one else can! I wanted to destroy her! James, if you’ve got the guts, kill me right now! Just like you did back then when you killed everyone who stood in your way! Come on! Do it!” James closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he opened his eyes again, they exhibited a cold, unfeeling sense of resolve.

“And you smell like a tequila-soaked bar mat. I’m getting drunk off your fumes.” I blink. “I what?” I let go and he slides back down a bit. He grins, breathless, still clinging to the window ledge. “Hi. I’m James. Stupid hormones. James tilted his head to the side. “You don’t have to talk about it but you can show me if you want. I’m a Somaji, remember?” “I thought you couldn’t use your gift on someone who has a gift?” I was confused and scared. I didn’t want James poking around in my brain. Half the time it confused me. I didn’t want to scare the poor guy off. “If you’re willing, I can. At least theoretically.”

I put it to the table just to clarify. He nodded, knowing damn well that he understood what I said. He knew me. He had heard about me. Heard of all the things I was capable of. And he knew I was not the man who spoke things lightly. “James came to us five years ago demanding that we sell him an untraceable poison.” He divulged, and the information hit me in the guts. I leaned back into my chair to give him the ear.

The man, feeling his anger justified by the arrival of a seemingly responsible figure, immediately explained, "Sir, I'm just trying to get home, and this young lady here bumped into me. She's been drinking and hurling insults at me for no reason." Nysaa, who had turned to face the intruder, was too intoxicated to immediately recognize the man as Mace. She raised a finger and slurred, "Oh great, another knight in shining armor." Then her eyes widened as the man's features became clearer. Nysaa's drunken realization sent shockwaves of panic through her. It was Mace, the very person she had vowed to take revenge on. Her face turned pale, and she took a hesitant step back, stumbling slightly.
