My chair scraped against the floor as I stood and rounded my desk. Christopher still hadn't dared to look at me. “Stand up.” He obeyed immediately. “I failed you, sir.” "You didn't fail me.” I held his gaze. “You failed Riley.” Before he could speak again, I pressed the intercom. “Adrian.” His voice answered almost instantly. “Yes, sir.” “You and Damien to my study now.” Less than a minute later, Adrian entered and Damien followed closely behind. “What happened?” Damien asked quietly. “Riley's been taken.” The words made my heart tighten.

Jax turned and walked into the bathroom, slamming the door behind him. Riley let out a breath and fell back onto the pillow. The ceiling was cracked. A long, jagged line ran from one corner to the light fixture. It looked like a map to nowhere. Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Ryan: You dead yet? She typed back with trembling fingers. I roll my eyes while I make sure I have all the books to return to the library. Riley is a bit of a player, always dating a different girl. I didn't want to go all out with the decorations, but I couldn't help myself. I heard the door ring as soon as I lit the last candle. I quickly rushed towards the door, undone my braids, played with them through my fingers, and felt some damp areas. I opened the door, and I sucked in my breath.
