Fortunately, the river was shallow and they could walk through it. "Isn't the Alpha supposed to protect and defend his pack? Why race out like a chicken?" James croaked while making chicken sounds. That did get to Ziegler, he pushed past Tasha and stopped before James. "Say that again?" "Guys?" Tasha swerved to catch the two guys behind her facing each other while she was a quarter halfway through the river.

Bright James’s basement smelled of damp earth and rusty metal. A bare lightbulb flickered over the hunter’s face, tied to a chair with thick rope. His dark, cold eyes showed not a hint of fear. I stood in front of him, arms crossed, while the rest of the pack formed a silent semicircle. Rage burned in my throat, but I forced myself to breathe. I couldn’t lose control. “Name,” James said firmly. We hadn’t questioned him before, leaving him hungry for a couple of days so desperation would loosen his tongue.

SERENA POV “What is it?” I asked, already moving closer to her before she could finish her sentence. Her expression was tense, her steps hurried as she matched mine. “It’s about a twenty-five-year-old werewolf named James,” she said, lowering her voice instinctively “He attempted to kill his fated mate for his lover.” My steps halted abruptly. “What?” I asked again, my voice sharper this time to be sure I heard her correctly, disbelief cutting through me. My heart skipped violently. Of all crimes, this was one of the gravest. It was a taboo, one of the highest levels.

James's pupils trembled violently. "No way... it can't be..." At that moment, the deputy minister stepped forward and bowed respectfully to Scarlett. "Commander. Should we level the Whitmore family now?" Silence. James's face went completely white. "No... no way..." Scarlett's gaze returned to him. Cold. Merciless. "Say it again. Where is my child?"
