Japanese Folklore Creatures Novels & Stories

Halmeoni used to tell Jihoon stories about dokkaebi tricking humans and nine-tailed foxes eating the livers of men. Horror stories camouflaged as fables to teach lessons. But those types of stories were supposed to stay in books, not come to life and almost choke him to death.

One of the boys, the youngest, has some one-eye creature. It's like a dark gooey substance paste, and someone just glued those plastic eyes for arts and crafts. Its round yellow eyes look around frantically. I feel a chill running down my spine, seeing how disgusting it is. "In the Demon Realm, these are called Carcurus; they are low-level creatures that find a victim and stick themself on a host sucking the life force out of them."

He tilted his head, the long hair resting on his bare shoulders. It's really hard to imagine that the creature that made such a big noise just now could be such a human-like species. He looks like a human toddler just waking up from sleep. He watched me for a while, and then I felt the moisture fade from my hands, and a black, scaly object appeared before my eyes. It has four branches, like a monitor lizard's claw, but the center is covered with a thin layer of transparent flesh. I think it should be his hand, a kind of reptilian as well as fish characteristics of the 'hand'.

Everyone nodded with similar expressions of shock, surprise, and apprehension. Naoko had not read about a creature like this in the world book and did not remember coming across something like this in the creature encyclopedia. While Naoko was still pondering over what they should do, Aimi suggested "I think it's better to wait for them to approach us." Knowing that Aimi held memories beyond the world book, Naoko chose to bet on that knowledge and sounded her agreement.

According to her, it was a story used to scare and caution children in their times, but with time nobody heard of these stories again. Stories of scary creatures coming out from the pit of hell to torment mankind. Creatures who once rose from the darkness - seeking domination over the earth, wanting revenge on mankind. It was just in tiny pieces because she didn't recall the full story but she remembered the mark and the creatures who bore them. It was a magical mark - and the names of these creatures are Vorlak.

Now dear reader, I want to insert a bit of local Filipino Folklore into the Spa. In the future, we will be talking about other culture's mythological creatures as well but we can start with these for now. The aswangs are humans that augment themselves with a ritual then eating innards and drinking blood. The manananggals are also humans that augment themselves with magickal balms and consumption of human flesh, innards and blood. They mostly target unborn babes that they suck from the tummies of their mothers using a long, thin cord-like tongue.
