Cara thought she was only visiting the research institute where her parents had spent their lives chasing the future of human evolution. Then she met Mason. Created in a hidden laboratory and locked away from the world, Mason was beautiful, dangerous, and impossibly perfect. He could not speak like a normal person, but he knew her name. He feared everyone else, yet reached for her like she was the only thing he had ever wanted. The deeper Cara steps into the Murphy Institute, the more she realizes Mason is not the only secret buried there. Her parents’ research, Alice’s obsession, and Mason’s strange attachment to her are all connected by something no one wants her to uncover. He was made to be the next step in evolution. But when his instincts awaken, Cara begins to wonder if she was brought there to study him... Or to belong to him.

Chapter 1

Chapter 1:

Like most people, I detested the noise of the alarm clock.

The moment the bell rang, I hurled the alarm clock from my head to the ground. “That old bastard, with the shrill ringing again!!” The alarm clock bounced and rolled on the floor.

I lingered in bed for a while, then got up barefoot, resigned to my dad’s experiment for the material water supplement nutrition. As I reached for the kettle, my foot suddenly felt something cold.

It was a mirror. “Well… I haven’t really looked at myself for a long time.”

I open it, and a face stared back at me: dark and gloomy, with pale and red eyeballs.

“To be honest, you really have nothing feminine about you except your breasts,” Alex said about me.

I sneered; the reflection of the woman in the mirror became hideous. ‘Just a little lunatic born of a lunatic, so maybe he was right…’ I rubbed my breasts and posed for a moment in front of the mirror. I savored my own image.

The computer suddenly came to life, delivering a voice message: “Hey, my lovely girl Cara, how have you been? This is your dad speaking. Our research has been going well lately, your mom really misses you. So we talked for a while and decided to invite you to visit us and see our research. Also happy birthday, our baby girl:) Did you receive our gift? We hope you like it!”

As I listened to this message, I was reminded of a package that had arrived a few days ago. According to this, it must have been the gift that my dad had mentioned. This was unusual because even if they were busy with work, they would always come back to celebrate my birthday with me. I tried to suppress the sadness in my heart and walked to the corner of the door. I found the package and opened it: a Sony DV with a blue case, a map, and a ticket.

I was still puzzled by why my dad had given me this. He was a biologist, and he had never done this before. Usually, his previous gifts to me were various biological specimens that he had collected from around the world. Of course, with a little card like this:

Dear Cara,

This is the world’s largest butterfly, whose female wings can span up to 280 mm. They flutter in the air like pixies dancing in the sky. Do they resemble the ones that triggered the butterfly effect in the A****n rainforest? (Haha…just kidding, they only dwell in New Guinea:p) ……

So I was quite astonished by this seemingly ordinary gift. I pressed the DV boot button and expected to watch my dad’s new “Amazing species” videos. But the DV storage file was blank.

“What the hell does he want?” I wondered as I put down the DV; then I picked up the ticket on the table. The ticket was dated 07:00 am on September 1st.

“Excuse me? Tomorrow at 7 am !!What an amazing gift!” I was annoyed by this disrespectful schedule. I had to hurry to pack; when I turned around to start. On the bottom right of the computer, I saw something：

Chapter 2:
From here to the airport where the ticket, the fastest will take more than 2 hours, which does not include the red lights and traffic jams encountered on the road… After a quick scrubbing, I put on my clothes, packed my passport, wallet, and two changes of clothes into my backpack rushed out of the house. The lack of sleep began to give me a headache. Unfortanelly, my stomach is also in pain from not eating for too long. It's a terrible feeling., I began to wish the plane is not a budget airline. They have breakfast service. I am pressed for the time on the way; finally got to the airport before 7 o'clock.I swear, it was the most luxurious flight I've ever been on in my whole life. When I received the ticket, I was still wondering why there was no seat number on the ticket until I saw this. I realized that my parents worked for a very rich company. They even send private jets to pick up the employees' relatives. And me? I was pulled out of the airport crowd by a beautiful flight atte

Chapter 3:
I felt my body tremble with the white mist that had come out of the door.'Click'.The tall man with the gun pulled the safety of the gun in his hand. I didn't look closely, but I realized that the guns they were holding weren't ordinary at all. I knew nothing about guns, but they carry much bigger weapons than I've ever seen on TV before. The greater the volume, the greater the damage. I dare not dwell on it.Inside the door was another corridor, glass on either side of my arm. A few men dressed as Alice, one of whom pressed a red button on the wall As soon as he/she pressed the button, I was sprayed with an indescribable odor. The low temperature caused by the gas sent a shiver down my spine.“Relax, Sweetie, it's just a sanitizer,” Alice held me firmly in her arms and dragged me across the door on the other side of the hall, “You will see him later, so please relax, because your irritability may also affect him and cause us unnecessary trouble.”The next closed door was followed by

Chapter 4:
I was terrified. When I was a kid to see a shark in the Atlantic, or a wildebeest migrating into a lion's territory. None of this frightened me, but now I was curled up in the corner of the stern, trembling uncontrollably. Not just me. Elise's upset, too. She gripped the handle of the gun tightly. If anything goes wrong, she'll pull the trigger and sweep the water. He seemed to go back into the deep water, where large bubbles began to small bubbles on the side of the boat."Oh, there he is," said Alice with a smile and pulled the trigger, "Be quiet, baby."As soon as her voice fell, the lake immediately a large number of sprays. It's like an animal struggling in the water. Then the creature slowly floated up.Alice smiles more happily. She reached out and grabbed the creature from the water, pulling it out. When she saw the creature she had caught, her face suddenly changed. Its long body is covered with livid scales and its mouth is full of sharp teeth, which means the creature is a

Chapter 5:
“If it's just the human eye that needs light to look too closely, it's the most sophisticated organ in nature. Why isn't it perfect in terms of function?”I found my eyes as if she was strangling the general, can not help but move to his eyes.“Why not combine the wide-angle view of an eagle with the night vision of a cat?”I couldn't look at his eyes without a device to figure out the density of cones and the two concave centers in his eyes, or the shape of the lens without cutting it open. But during my trance, the pupil changes from a circle to a cone, which is the window through which the light enters, the intensity of the light.“Wouldn't it be a shame to lose the sea if it were only perfect on land?” Bewitched by the sound, I reached out and pressed on his eyelids. There is not only a thin layer of eyelids, but eyelids also wrapped under a layer of smooth thin, then the thin piece was gently pulled down by me.I can't help but gasp for this creation of the Creator. It's like whe

Chapter 6:
A child who hasn't grown up at all. This is the only word I can use to describe this creature."It's been about three months since it was created, and in terms of human adulthood, maybe it is a child... ... existing research, we can't measure its age by human standards, but something is certain.""What?""It has the intelligence of an eight-year-old human.""It's unlikely. He is not behaving like an eight-year-old boy.""You know, dolphins can also target a shark's weakness, and it has the intelligence of a five-year-old child, not to mention what the genes say," said Miss Claire, who drew my blood. Also, she told me she would get someone to draw my blood, but she ended up doing it herself.“There aren't enough people on here because the research that was stalled has been brought up to speed,” she turned her head and tore open the bag containing the syringe, "Who wants to come early in the morning and draw your blood, and then take that Monster's blood..."Claire rolled her eyes, a fa

Chapter 7:
Its intelligence is no less than 8 years old human. This knowledge makes me shudder, "Let me out!""What?" Alice's voice sounded surprised."It knows the blind spot of the camera. How can an eight-year-old child know how to flirt?" I still have the body that was just licked and gnawed by its electric shock, waves of shivering."Heh," she said through the intercom with a muffled laugh. "You're so jumpy, it doesn't mean anything.""How can it not say anything?" The thought of its profound smile sent a shiver down my spine. Here again, here again! I watched it burrow down again, it is humped back like the back of a feeding cat. The golden eyes were glued to my bare arms. It lazily stuck out its scarlet tongue and licked it. Then it lifted its head and opened its mouth. It's like saying to me, I am eating…"It's going to eat me!! !" I screamed and couldn't hold it any longer.I thought this might be the best I could do in my life, and it stumbled, fell back, and hit its head on the ground

Chapter 8:
Alice was taken aback by the turn of events.Fortunately, its later movements were noticeably slower, and the force of the impact smaller and smaller. He sat down slowly, maintaining his stoop to gather strength. But his head was raised and locked firmly in my sight.I looked at the pair of golden eyes, from bright slowly become dark, little by little. As if he were questioning me. Why did I cheat it?I felt my eye sockets turn sour, "Does it have to be this rough?" I couldn't hold back any longer and grabbed Alice's arm."Sweetie, you have to remember that no matter how similar it looks to humans, it's still a beast. When you were in the wild, would you approach the lion with a needle without any preparation?" She tapped me on the shoulder.I certainly understand these principles, and can not be unprepared to approach the beast, this is the basic principle of biologists to study the beast.‘Bam!’ The glass door shook violently w

Chapter 9:
The research had finally begun after I had let go of the last of my worries.Alice also seemed to notice a change in my thinking. She no longer limited my time with it and even provided me with a lot of equipment."Perfect, just perfect." From the blood drawn, the genes of the different species fit together perfectly, and gene expression happens to pick out the best bits.“How do your guys do it? You make it just happen to be the best part, and you end up looking so much like a human...” I was incoherent with excitement.“Yes, Yes, my girl,” said Alice, holding my shoulder, “You're so excited,” she said, pushing me toward the screen. He lies on the bank, slapping the water with his paws."We use a lot of animal genes, fish, birds, apes...""There won't be any more humans?" I turned my head."No, no, no!" She said, turning my head to face the screen. "It was just an egg."It was true, a

No reproductive organs. How is that possible? I turned off the instrument and carried him out of it.Alice, they like to call his legs “hindlimbs”, and in their hearts, they think of him as a mentally retarded beast."You're not, are you?" I held his legs. "Spread your legs."I reached up and gently stroked his lower calf. He squinted and hummed twice, spreading his legs along with my strength.Only three toes. The foot is also three times the size of a human being, and the central bone of the foot is very soft and can be bent at will. This would be a part of a partial reptile. When he climbs a tree, the balls of his feet bend and the nails in his toes hook onto the trunk. The muscles under the scales beat strongly and strongly. The crus bones bend back, similar to the kangaroo."Well... let me see here." I was so drawn to its other features that I almost forgot my ultimate goal. I felt between his two legs, where his geni
