Jason’s eyes had gone small and sharp with something like calculation. He’d been a predator in his way; he’d assumed he could stall, charm, bribe, or redirect. None of those options applied right now. He reached for an ally he thought nearby—some legalistic shadow or supportive rumor—and found only the truth in the hall and the bright, terrible light eating at his skin.
“You think you can kill me?” he managed, finally, venom leaking into the syllables as bravado tried to steady his voice.
