A chorus of yips and barks broke out around us as bystanders from Pack Jackson and even his own men became enveloped in the energy of our change, and I felt the electricity in the air intensify as they joined us. His large muzzle was ready for me, so when I made contact he locked his jaw around the nape of my neck, throwing me out into the crowd of wolves gathered. I shrugged off the whimpers of the hapless souls that cushioned my landing and scrabbled back over to face him. His patronisingly smooth voice crawled into my mind. You’re making a scene, Nova. Get back inside. I snarled deeply, letting my lips curl back as far as they could go to show my canines.

’ I shouted at Nova as I let her take control. As I shifted, his hold on me was forced back. He’d not expected that I could shift. I don’t even know if he realized I wasn’t the same human I had been all those years ago. Nova pushed off the wall with her hind legs and launched at him. Nova used the flash of light to blind him as she went around his demonic claw and aimed for his throat. I winced as I heard the bones break as her strong jaws tightened. “Whoa…” Aidan’s voice made Nova raise her head, his father’s limp neck still in her jaws. “You…have a wolf… very interesting huntress.”

He approached me with magnificent speed, with his jaws extended. As he was just about to bite me, Kaden quickly got in between us, holding his jaws apart with his bare hands. Kaden smiled as he watched Yakmesh eyes lit up with fear. Kaden began pulling his jaws wide apart, until we heard the sound of Yakmesh jaws snapping apart, leaving him dead. Every werewolf, paused as they stared at the scene with utter horror. Kaden stood there in the middle of the moonlights, all drenched and covered in blood.

Wanted to sink teeth into his wrist and make him let go, make him submit. Pain exploded through my gums. I gasped, tasting copper, and when I touched my mouth my fingers came away bloody. My canines had lengthened, sharp and wrong and terrifyingly right. "Fuck yes." Jax's grin was feral as he released me. "That's a start. Again." He came at me faster this time, and instinct took over. I dodged, my body moving in ways I didn't know it could, and my hand came up with claws I didn't remember growing. They raked across his arm, tearing leather and skin.

Isla on the floor, the snow beneath her was pink with blood. And then, standing tall before her was the huge form of the White Wolf. Bigger, more terrifying. Her claws were coated with pink snow. Before I could step forward to stop her, her claws slashed across Isla's belly and Isla let out a piercing scream. I froze on the spot, my blood ran cold as I felt a chill run down my spine. Even before I could fully react to that, the White Wolf lifted those blooded claws again and with a swift move, she slashed Isla's throat open. Stripes of blood spilled into the snow with the movements of her claw.

Wrong. A jolt of electricity shot through her skull. Fragments. A dark room. The same feeling of viscous liquid, but colder, metallic… The memory-vision shattered as the creature lunged, jaws gaping wide for her throat. “Get off me!” Her fist connected with its temple. The sound was like a melon hitting concrete. The thing’s head snapped sideways with unnatural force, its body crumpling. “Holy shit,” Jax breathed behind her, his terror momentarily eclipsed by awe. Useless Ability? That was raw, terrifying power.

Their bodies aligned in that new hold, his knee occasionally brushing hers as they turned. Sweat prickled along my spine under my jacket. I wanted to feel the impact of bone on bone. One clean hook to the jaw, the kind that snaps the head back and leaves a bruise for weeks. I’d done it before in rougher settings and Jason’s type folded quick once blood hit the floor. Here, though, I swallowed the impulse like bad liquor.

After eating my fill, sleepiness crashed over me, impossible to resist. "I’m going to sleep and recover. After you’re done eating, keep an eye on the fire." The moment the words left my mouth, I could no longer hold on. I fell into a deep sleep. At the very instant I lost consciousness, the omega, Cael Ardent, and the healer, Lorian Crest, both lifted their heads. In that moment, all traces of fear vanished from their eyes. All that remained was venom and killing intent. The two exchanged a glance, claws flashing out as they lunged straight at me.

Neither one of them noticed the two Originals keeping them safe from the onslaught until the sound of Calix and Theron baying behind them not only caught the attention of the tunnel visioned Mj and Jay, but it caused the large, almost gaunt looking Nova to raise it’s head and look directly at them. Nova raised their large head and roared in their direction, causing a flood of walkers to head straight for them. The water was shockingly cold — October-cold, the kind that knocks breath out of you — and shallow enough at the edge that he hit stone underneath, and then the wolf was on top of him, pinning him with a weight that made his ribs creak. He threw his arms up to cover his face. Which was exactly the wrong thing to do. Jaws closed around his forearm with a pressure that built and built and did not stop building until something gave way with a sound he felt more than heard. He screamed — a raw, unplanned sound, nothing like he would have chosen — and clutched the arm against his chest. The pain was extraordinary. Clean and total, the way serious injuries are before the shock fully arrives. Then
