I couldn't get out from under him fast enough to avoid those fangs as he sank them into the side of my neck. Searing pain wracked my entire body as I gasped for breath before every single muscle in my body seized. I saw a flash of white as Nova grabbed him, pulling him off me as she sank her teeth into the now screaming man. I couldn't lift a single finger, not considering that it took every single ounce of my strength just to breathe. My head fell to the side, and I felt the warm, wet puddle before I could see the quickly spreading crimson puddle.

Kim leaned closer. There—clear as daylight—sat a second set of canines, deep and oversized, crowned like knives. The maxilla and mandible were subtly wrong: denser cortical bone, a jawline built for torque, faint supraorbital ridging that didn’t belong to an eleven-year-old girl. Human, yes—but edged with something else. Kim’s breath snagged. A whisper not meant for the room: “My God, Jane… what are you?” The bed eased back out with a soft hydraulic sigh. Jane blinked awake, surfacing as if from a deep lake.

The severed jaw spasmed until Cerebus tore it apart and flung it back into the basin. Two more tentacles struck. Jake slid inside the first—elbow high, knife low—and pinned the mouth against a fallen bollard. Steel went up through the hinge; he tore sideways and cleared the blade. The second swept for ankles; he hopped it by inches as tile exploded behind him. Another mouth snapped at Gabe’s forearm and caught canvas and rain. Brooke fired. The shotgun barked once—short, brutal. The modified load hit the jaw hinge and blew it apart in a wet concussion of teeth and cartilage. Brooke pumped and fired again without hesitation, walking the spread along the limb until it recoiled.

Nova’s eyes were bulging as she fought to break free from the bastard's grip. A wave of anger washed over me, my vision turning red as rage consumed me. I let out an ear-blasting howl as I gritted my teeth angrily. I felt claws stretched out of my fingers. I leapt forward and dipped my claws into the guy’s back. “Aah!” he groaned, throwing off Nova before gripping my hands that were in his gut. I watched as Nova groaned on the floor which makes me want to learn even more. With a snarl, he made to charge at me, but I was faster than he was. I grabbed him by the head and ripped his head off his body in a brutal twist.

A chorus of yips and barks broke out around us as bystanders from Pack Jackson and even his own men became enveloped in the energy of our change, and I felt the electricity in the air intensify as they joined us. His large muzzle was ready for me, so when I made contact he locked his jaw around the nape of my neck, throwing me out into the crowd of wolves gathered. I shrugged off the whimpers of the hapless souls that cushioned my landing and scrabbled back over to face him. His patronisingly smooth voice crawled into my mind. You’re making a scene, Nova. Get back inside. I snarled deeply, letting my lips curl back as far as they could go to show my canines.

I don’t even know if he realized I wasn’t the same human I had been all those years ago. Nova pushed off the wall with her hind legs and launched at him. Nova used the flash of light to blind him as she went around his demonic claw and aimed for his throat. I winced as I heard the bones break as her strong jaws tightened. “Whoa…” Aidan’s voice made Nova raise her head, his father’s limp neck still in her jaws. “You…have a wolf… very interesting huntress.”

I could not hear anything being said around me because all I could hear, all I could think of was my papa—as my eyes stayed glued to his head which was now pale and lifeless, and his body laying in a growing pool of his own blood. They had killed him. He had done nothing wrong, and they had murdered him right before my eyes. I could almost feel my heart physically breaking as each breath I took felt like tiny shards of needles being dragged through my lungs. Tears were streaming endlessly down my face as I still looked at him, but nothing could bring him back. My papa was gone. Dead. Murdered—for something he did not do. They had taken Papa from us and now they wanted to take our home too.
