The sound was sickening. A tear slipped from Jericho’s eye. It wasn’t because he just took a life. No, we’d done that many times before. But this wasn’t just any life. He’d been forced to take his younger brother’s life. The same brother that we’d sword to protect. Not even the knowledge of him being a batshit crazy psycho didn’t make this easier. Knowing that Sam had gone off the rails, becoming something fucked and dangerous, didn’t make that tear any lighter. It only dug the ache deeper. The fight going on around us seemed to come to a standstill upon Sam’s link to his pack breaking.

Demon General Samoa bellowed, and the weapons that had been sent flying stopped in their tracks, rapidly returning to the one who made them. “Converge!” General Samoa ordered, and the weapons melted back into wind and gathered together before forming a large sword that towered into the heavens. Sam’s voice rages out of the communication stone like a mountain storm, and his wild barks make my golden eyes blink with absolute confusion. My neck automatically twists to look across the Jupiter lodge at Franklin Sterling. He is still standing by the stone fireplace, flashing a bright, happy smile as he speaks to Jordan Baker. I press the link tighter to my ear and ask Sam, "What madness has happened to your pack project?"

I just can't stop thinking about being alone with him again. I arrive in the lobby of the Petit Hermitage Hotel fifteen minutes late, having driven Sam to a karate lesson. He loved it and didn't want to leave. He pestered the instructor with questions about how many lessons he'd need to fight like he does in action movies. I scan the tables in the foyer for Jaden, but he's nowhere to be seen. Cursing under my breath, I took my phone out of my bag and dialed his number.
