The beast lunged again, jaws open wide enough to swallow her. Instinct overrode thought. She threw up the dagger. A crescent of pale light erupted from it, striking the monster’s snout. It shrieked, staggering back, smoke rising from the wound. The threads to the monolith flickered.
Everyone froze a heartbeat at the sight.
“You hurt it!” Rowan shouted.
The beast roared and charged again, angrier, faster.
Silas sprang between Ava and the oncoming mass. The monster’s claw caught him mid-leap and flung him across the clearing. He hit a tree with a sickening crack and slid to the ground, shifting back to human as he fell.
