“Lucas, can you cover the early shift tomorrow too? Jen called in sick again.”
Lucas looked at him. Really looked. The weary man, the same tired requests, the cycle he’d been trapped in for years. And before he could second-guess himself, the words slipped out, calm but steady.
“Pete… I don’t think I can. Actually, I need to tell you—I’m resigning.”
Pete blinked, mid-yawn frozen. “You what?”
“I’m quitting,” Lucas said gently, though his back was straight. “I appreciate everything, really. But it’s time for me to move on. Effective today.”
