The flap shifted, and a boy stepped out.
He was taller than Nessa by a head, but his frame was slight, almost wiry. His hair was dark and fell unevenly over his forehead, as though it hadn’t been cut with care in years. His eyes, large, pale, and startlingly clear, found Aria immediately, holding her gaze with an intensity that made her spine straighten.
“This is Lio,” Nessa said. “My friend.”
Aria smiled, but he didn’t return it. Instead, he reached for a small roll of leather at his side and unfastened it with careful fingers. Inside was a collection of charcoal sticks, worn down to stubs, and several sheets of rough parchment.
