I don’t understand what he’s trying to say. I heard him but it hasn’t fully registered to me. “I don’t understand,” I say slowly, confused. “I’m not the real Jack Wills,” he repeats patiently. It makes me even more confused. Thinking that it’s all a joke and that he is currently making fun of me, I cackle with laughter. I laugh so hard that I have to hold on my stomach. I look at him again and is stunned to see that he is giving me a serious look.

“Jay. Don’t you dare laugh. I’m being serious.” “I know, I know,” I wheezed, still holding back a grin. “It’s just you have no idea how funny you look right now, like your brain’s trying to reboot itself.” But under the humor, my chest hurt. Because I didn’t have an answer. Not a real one. Not one that would make sense to him or to me.

He spat, and I placed my palms on my chest just to specify that I was worried. "I'm just concerned, you're the only friend I have." He pulled a sober face and then burst into laughter. "You're weird, you know that, right? You're cringing me out with those eyes," he said and then shook his head. "Joker," I commented, kicking my feet at the edge of the desk. "Believer," he snapped back, and I shook my head, laughing with him too, but I never meant that. He kept my hopes high and he's so unreadable. I was really mad, but then I only exhaled softly and gnashed my teeth.

I asked him straightforwardly “Zara, why are you not talking to me?” he asked with sadness all over his handsome face. “Don’t you know!” I said rolling my eyes on him “I was just joking Zara, I didn’t meant any harm” he said in a saddest tone ever. “Joking…why is that every serious situation is a joke for you Rocky? Can’t you act mature for once in a life time?” I said in angry tone. He lowered his gaze and hung his head low, as if he was ashamed.

“How hard can it be?” Just as I’m about to have a stroke, he breaks into a huge grin. “I’m kidding. Of course I’ve parachuted before.” I hit him several times on the chest with my fists. “STOP – DOING – THAT!” He laughs. “What?” “Bullshitting every time someone asks you a question!” “You ever heard the expression, ‘Laugh to keep from crying’?” “Yeah, so?” “So I can either joke around and keep it light, or I can be serious and we can all be miserable and afraid and then panic and lose focus and die. Which is it gonna be?”

His eyes locked onto mine. “If he ever hurts you again…” His words dropped like a stone in my chest, and I froze. “I will willingly kill.” I blinked. Shock stole my breath. My first reaction was disbelief. Then, against my better judgment, I let out a laugh. It was harsh, incredulous, but it came out anyway. “You… already know how to joke now, huh?” Jaron’s lips twitched, almost the ghost of a smile, but his voice remained steady, calm, and terrifyingly sincere. “I’m not joking.”

I couldn't care if his head cracked. “That hurt,” he whined as he robbed the spot, but I felt satisfied at my revenge. “You psycho Joker!” I said ready to hit him again when he grabbed my wrist. “Joker is a psycho already so your sentence is redundant. It's just like saying ‘you black charcoal'” he said and continued laughing. “What are you so insufferable?” I couldn't help but ask, “I feel like pulling my hair out just talking to you. Who knew you had this side of you too?”

“I –” “Alright, enough,” Joker snarled, totally done here. “Jesus fuck, you really think we wanna listen to this shit? You’re fucking disgusting, both of you prick-loving losers.” “Yeah, Joker’s right.” Nails lifted his chin, and the circle of men tightened. “I’ve been lenient because I have to admit, this had a certain entertainment value, but now I’m fucking grossed out. You going to come quietly, Cuddy, or do we have to drag you?”

“She really had low standards. What's your point?” “People will misunderstand if they see us like this.” “You know that for someone as intelligent as you are, you talk too much.” “Yeah right.” He grunted, pressing his lips together. He had never won an argument against Jade and he had no chance of ever winning. “Don't worry.
