Chapter One The present NSO Homeland “What is going on?” Joy glanced at the New Species leading her through the building and continued, “I received a call that there was some kind of emergency with someone I counseled in the past. They said it was urgent that I come.” A snarl came from farther down the hallway and made her jump. Her escort bolted away, abandoning her to rush into a room. She hurried forward despite that terrifying sound. She paused at the entrance to the room to stare in absolute horror at the scene playing out.

My phone buzzed in my hand so hard my fingers went numb. I looked down. The DMs were stacking up faster than I could read them. [Sophia Shaw, come on, we're classmates, give me a discount. Fifty for one round, deal?] [With a body like yours, who could stop at just twice a night?] [I've sent the money. I'll meet you at the hotel you pinned tonight] My mind went blank. I threw the phone away. That suffocating feeling–like a plastic bag being pulled over my head–came rushing back, choking me.

Just when her interest died down and she was about to give up, she saw that flashy idiot refuse to talk to Aquilo and even began choosing his Lady Luck. Good. She gave him a gentle smile. Then, she turned to Abel and cooed at him, “Do I have the honor of having you as my God of Luck, Mr. Abel?” When Abel saw how dazzled Joey was by Ruth’s smile, he scowled before looking away coolly to stare at the smiling Ruth. He grabbed her chin and shook it in displeasure. “Do you smile this happily at anyone?” In her confusion, Ruth said, “Huh?”

Yet, Jinx shoved it aside before gasping happily. “Where? Where!” he rasped with a smile lingering on his lips. Again, Leonard was reluctant to disclose the location, but after he got yelled by, he eventually did. Rapidly, Jinx slipped into a large hoodie, then rushed out of the room. While he descended the apartment stairs quickly, happiness surged continuously through his veins; he's been so worried about Jessica, and now he can ultimately meet her. He boarded a taxi to the club and kept pestering the taxi driver to go faster—he narrowly escaped engaging in a brawl with the driver, since his urges were slightly annoying. Arriving at the clubhouse, he found it as busy and frisky as ever.

As I held my feverish daughter in one arm and stood in a kitchen that reeked of acrid smell, I stared at the empty snack packets piling up on the floor and then at the photos of Edwin and Diana. I'd reached my breaking point. I clutched Primily tightly and stormed out the door. Betty's shrill voice chased after me. "Where do you think you're going? You have nowhere to run to, you orphan! My son will never look for you! You and that useless brat will come crawling back anyway!" I held onto the winning lottery ticket in my pocket, determined to seize the chance to start over.

'This girl is going to pull my hand out of its socket one day. I followed her to a considerably big building with bright lights and loud music. I smiled—I had a thing for parties. We passed by a buff guard who looked really scary and ready to kill. We showed him our IDs, and he let us through. The music inside the club was even louder. I swear my eardrums were about to burst. I sighed in relief when, surprisingly, my favorite song started to play: "Lucky" by Aurora. "Stay close to me at all times. Let’s get some drinks!" Sophie shouted unnecessarily, considering the music wasn’t that loud anymore. I followed her to the bar, avoiding all the dancing figures. The club was packed.

Abi stared lost for words at the crowd dancing and cheering, Josy quickly pulled her through the crowd, Abi scanned as they walked past a door into the next room before appearing at the back of the building where an enormous pool stood. “What is this place?” “Welcome to the Jinx club, Abigail,” Josy says, “Hey, Josy over here!” a voice called out, and immediately Josy hauled a stunned Abi to the direction where some group of people sat. Everything was foreign to Abi, she gaped around like a child. “Hey everyone,” “Hello, Josy, you're late today.” the voice that called out to her earlier spoke up, “I know, I was delayed,” she responds with an exhausted sigh.

I was no longer saddled by thoughts of drowning in debts or my father abandoning us. Completely intoxicated by alcohol, three men walked over to our table and began talking with Joy. The mood of the night drastically changed from two girls having fun to two girls being preyed on. I knew we had to leave before anything regrettable happened. “Let's go home, Joy, it's not fun anymore ..” “Go home if you want to,” Joy replied, “The fun just started, why are you so naive?” I didn't need anyone to tell me that Joy was enjoying the attention, I stood from the table and staggered my way through the club.
