I really did. But hey, that’s life. There’s a beat before the next message arrives. Mom: Forget your father and me. Live your life. Promise me? I stare at the screen so long it dims. Then I write: Jude: I can’t promise. But I’ll try. I hit send, set the phone down beside me, and lie back on the bed. The quiet hum of the dorm sinks in. Somewhere down the hall, someone’s laughing. In another room, music plays. Life is still happening. It always is.

Life moved on the axis of small choices and their unintended catastrophes. Lila eased back into her armchair, closed her eyes for a moment, and let the façade of victory settle around her like a robe. She had won this stage. She had extinguished one light. She did not feel the first ripple of what would come when small things refused to stay buried. She picked the next call. “Jude is dead? Good. I wanted to distract the police from his real death. Now get rid of his body.” She ended the call.

Jude replied and popped another cookie into his mouth. "I love it, the change is really obvious. I love your new confidence and perspectives. "How about your relationship life, who's the lucky girl," Edwardo asked and paid more attention to Jude. He really wanted to know who was in Jude's life, now that he has grown into a very confident young man. "I'm sorry to say but none for now," Jude replied and looked at the tray beside him. He had finished the cookies already, it was only the juice that was remaining.

"Thank Ms. Ellison for her kindness on my behalf, but my life isn't meant to clean up after her." I hung up and looked out at the busy traffic below. The collapse of that project had come even faster than I expected. A faint smile spread across my lips.

"Let it go? Gemma killed Zack because of her friend. You want me to just let it go?" Helen's face paled. I continued, saying, "I will never forgive her in this life. She can stop dreaming." Then, I slammed the door in her face. Returning to my room, I leaned against the door and slowly slumped to the floor. In the living room, my grandmother was still humming Zack's favorite nursery rhyme when he was little. I lowered my hands and retrieved the photo from my pocket. It was taken on the day of Zack's graduation. He was wearing a cap and gown, grinning stupidly at the camera.

"Wendy, don't stop me! Ricky's gone, and I don't want to live either! Tell me where he is. I'm going with him!"
