His gaze slid past all of us and fixed on Marie.
“She’s beautiful,” he whispered, like a man seeing the sun for the first time.
As the mages stepped inside, they flared, magic coming off them bright and clean.
“Now now,” Mama said, looking amused and not a bit scared. “You hurt me, you hurt your King. What you give me, I give him tenfold.” She tapped her apron pulling out a voodoo doll. “Mama got her insurance hea.”
Sophie moved like she meant to attack, and froze mid-step. Not fear, something in the air took hold, syrup-thick. Her muscles stood out, arms straining, nothing giving. Mama laughed.
