My face grows somber, not expecting an honest answer out of him.
His mother freezes, her fork mid-air. "Son?" she whispers, seeing him vulnerable taking her aback.
He inhales a large breath, lifting his head from looking at his plate.
"It sucks traveling in planes and long car rides to the sound of your own mind. Anyone would get bored," he states, his tone of voice taking a different direction than before.
His mother seems to relax with that answer, but I'm not convinced. It sounds like Max is lonely, not bored.
