I am a Catalyst. The Spark, the lore calls me. The problem with being a Spark was two-fold. Monsters were drawn to me. And I'd known so many of them that I found myself unable to be intrigued by any normal, human male. I was drawn to those dangerous breeds now, like a moth to flame, how much could I really resist their primal aggression? You'd think that with my time as a Spark, I'd have learned how to recognize each creature. But there were so many, I didn't know where to begin. 제왕절개로 아이를 낳은 지 일주일째 되는 날, 심민규는 친구들을 집으로 불러들였다. 아들을 얻었다며 축하 파티를 연다는 이유로 열댓 명이 되는 손님들이 집 안으로 몰려들었다. 하지만 그 누구도 신발을 벗지 않아, 깨끗했던 거실 바닥은 온통 흙투성이가 되었다. 심민규는 침대에서 쉬고 있던 나를 억지로 깨웠다. “사람들이 다 밖에서 기다리고 있는데, 혼자 드러누워 쉬고 있으면 내 체면이 뭐가 되겠어? 빨리 나와.” 나는 몸이 천근만근 무거웠지만 그의 말에 어쩔 수 없이 일어나 부엌으로 향했다. 홀로 10가지 반찬과 국을 준비하는 동안 욱신거리는 통증은 더 심해져 갔다. 마지막으로 뜨거운 국을 식탁에 올리려던 순간, 소이현이 일부러 내 배에 있는 수술 자리를 건드렸다. 그녀의 돌발행동에 깜짝 놀란 나는 손이 떨렸고, 국이 그녀의 신발 위로 쏟아지고 말았다. 심민규의 얼굴이 순식간에 굳어졌다. “지금 뭐 하는 거야? 이현이는 막 귀국하자마자 우리 아들을 보러 와준 거야. 이렇게 민폐를 끼쳐?” 그의 말에 주변 사람들이 맞장구를 쳤다. “그러게요. 혜주 씨, 이현이한테 너무한 거 아니에요?” “민규랑 이현이는 소꿉친구인데, 두 사람 사이에 뭔가 더 있었다면 혜주 씨가 이 자리에 낄 기회는 없었겠죠.” “이현이의 신발이 한정판인 거 몰라요? 2천만 원도 훌쩍 넘는 건데, 어쩌시려고...” 소이현은 마치 자신이 피해자인 듯 몸을 움츠렸고, 그녀의 눈가에는 눈물이 맺혀있었다. “아무래도 혜주 씨가 저를 싫어하는 것 같아. 난 이만 먼저 가는 게 낫겠어. 더 민폐 끼치기 싫으니까.” 심민규는 곧장 그녀의 손을 붙잡고 나를 향해 차갑게 말했다. “당장 엎드려 이현이의 신발이나 닦아!” 그가 소이현을 감싸는 모습에 가슴이 찢어질 듯 아팠다. 참고 있던 눈물이 금방이라도 터질 것 같았지만, 나는 떨리는 목소리로 말했다. “아직 수술 자리가 아물지 않아서 허리를 못 굽혀...” 내 말에 그의 얼굴은 더 굳어졌다. “아들 낳았다는 걸 핑계 대지 마. 허리를 못 굽히면 무릎을 꿇고 닦아. 그게 싫으면 당장 집에서 나가!”
