Anya’s POV The heater in the van had given up hours ago. What little warmth it managed to cough out now was pathetic—nothing more than a faint, lukewarm sigh that barely stirred the air before surrendering to the high-altitude cold seeping through every crack and seam. Outside, the wind carried the sharp bite of pine resin and distant snow, pressing against the metal walls like an unwelcome guest who refused to leave. I had cocooned Kai in three layers of the heaviest sound blankets we could find in the back—those thick, quilted slabs normally used to swallow the brutal vibration of bass drums and crashing cymbals on stage. When one of them went over to my side of the car, I rolled my window down, I couldn’t help but notice the large gun at his back. Fuck. If a guy needed this much security…he had to be knee deep in some high profile shit. “State your name and the purpose of your visit,” he told me in a bored tone. “I need to see Jonathan Winters,” I said insistently. “Have you had any prior visits?” he asked as if he had relayed this to a thousand people already. “Appointments?” “I don’t need one.” I said, sounding more confident than I felt. “I am Kai Hunter. Night Winters’ boyfriend. And I need to see Jonathan Winters right now.”

Nora Duncan had clearly been admitted to the clinical medicine program! Refusing to believe it, she immediately called Nora's high school teacher. "Nora Duncan turned down her spot at Northbridge. You didn't know?" The teacher sounded even more confused. "She's already gone abroad for college."

The alpha weight in the room grew so dense it felt as though the oxygen itself had been squeezed out of the high rafters; one of the younger maids near the back of the hall collapsed to her knees with a muffled gasp, unable to bear the raw pressure of the King’s focus. "The winter alliance demands a clean perimeter, Mei Ling," Kai Feng said, his voice a low, mechanical rasp that didn't sound like the man who had pulled me from the river mud three hours ago. It was the voice of the *Moonborn Fate* machine—the rigid, unyielding logic of a plot that required a sacrifice to move the gears forward. "A house that bleeds from the inside cannot hold the western passes against the frost."

I wanted him to confirm exactly what kind of trash he was before I took him apart. ​"I know you won't! This fucker said, his voice dropping into that arrogant, self-assured tone that made my skin crawl. "By the way, I’m Alpha Sean of the Winterfall Pack. You must have heard of me." ​I let out a soft, mock-impressed hum. "Oh. It’s a pleasure meeting you, Alpha. I’m Kai." I used my alias with a smooth, deceptive grace. "And yeah, I’ve heard a lot about you. More than you can imagine."

Kai meets us on the front steps with his mate standing by his side when we return. I get out as soon as the SUV comes to a stop and make my way up to stand in front of him. I hold out my hand and he takes it, shaking it as I then quickly pull him into a bro hug. He chuckles and pulls back, wrapping his arm around a very beautiful female. She shyly smiles at me as Kai introduces her to me. “Alpha, thank you. This is my mate, Summer. Summer, this is my Alpha and friend Zachariah.”

Mateo asked Kai. Kai heaved a sigh and look at his friend. They both had their eyes squinted under the sun, but the heat didn’t feel so bad as the winter was approaching. “I vowed that I will never come back here,” Kai replied. “It doesn’t feel right to be back,” he told Mateo.

I heard footsteps on the wooden porch and lifted my eyes to see Kai standing in front of me. “I am truly sorry for your loss, Fallon. Please know anything you need, you have my full resources at your disposal. Obviously you are excused from work for as long as you need. I will send movers tomorrow to assist in packing your things and moving them to the pack house.” Kai nodded his head and turned to leave.

​Later that night. ​The villa was in "Ghost Mode," the lights dimmed to a dull crimson. Kai was stabilized, tucked into the specialized medical bunk in the sub-level, his vitals monitored by a silent AI. He was still out, but the silver had faded from his eyes, replaced by a deep, restful brown. ​I stood in the kitchen, the massive Portuguese oven standing open. I wasn't kneading dough. I was cleaning the bolt-action of the long-range rifle, the rhythmic snick-slide of the metal the only sound in the room.

K•E•L•S•I:::: I used all my will power to focus my attention on the teacher as i overheard soft mumurs from every corner. "Ah! There you are, can you please tell me and the class your name? He encouraged. "My name is Kelsi Itohan" I tried to be audible as I could. "I'm a new student here" my voice slightly shaking. He nodded "Welcome, Kelsi the teacher replied with a smile that soothe my feeling.
