Every story has a beginning, some good, some bad, mine has never been a happy one, no matter who, or how I tell it, nobody will believe me. I can't rely on the people in my life, My parents ignore me, or are cruel to me, my friends are unreliable, and aren't trustworthy either. So what happens when I turn 16 years old, and run away from my problems to another world, only to find myself in the same magical world I played make belief in as a kid? With heartbreak at every turn, and a possible new relationship on the horizon, what could possibly go wrong in this world that hasn't happened to me on Earth?!

And not just because Mama had said so. I stalked off, turning South, with Silver Waters' territory on my right, and Crimson Forest's on my left, knowing that I'd eventually reach somewhere that belonged to neither. Somewhere warmer. Probably one of those chaotic, noisy, overcrowded human cities that they all talked about with such derision. "Ava!" Tyler called, sounding hurt, but I raised my middle finger over my shoulder, and didn't bother turning back.

There was peace in the deep, and a stillness I hadn’t realized I’d needed. We kept going. Eventually, the seafloor changed. The terrain smoothed into wide-open sand beds, broken occasionally by crumbled stone pillars, scattered statues, and the skeletons of long-forgotten buildings, now worn by time and tide. Vines of coral and sea moss wrapped around the broken walls like gentle hands, reclaiming what once was. I slowed, pulling gently on Kairos’s hand. “What is this place?” Kairos looked at the ruins with a softness in his eyes. “This is the Lost City,” he said. “It was once the heart of our people. My great-grandfather lived here, long before the migration.”

Its face was hidden beneath a hood, but when it spoke, its voice was layered - one moment male, the next female, the next something inhuman. "You have come at last." A shiver crawled down Nicola’s spine. "Who are you?" The figure lifted its head just enough for her to see the glint of silver eyes beneath the hood. "I am the Keeper of the Lost," it said. "The guardian of what was stolen. And you… are the one who seeks the truth." Nicola’s breath caught. Elias stepped forward. "She has come to understand what lies ahead." The Keeper tilted its head, as if studying her. Then it gestured to the altar. "Then she must remember."
