The uncertainty

The alpha followed by the pack walked heavily into the main area and questioned us again through the mind 'Have you both gone insane? How can you agree to her proposal?'

'Not this lowly animal again' says the late princess. 'I've had enough of your trash talk. Leave my grandchildren alone so we can go ahead with what we were doing earlier.'

'Did you forget the pact you made with the previous alpha? You swore you would not try to come back to life.' said the alpha following a howl.

'And you lowly creatures swore to never intervene in my work' says the late princess by tilting her face and raising her left eyebrow.

'We're here to warn you, princess. You need to stop!' stressed the alpha and we hear the words as clearly as someone spoke them out loud.

'I don't need warnings from lowly creatures. Leave or I would have to force you out'

'Ma princess, please don't forget that its your greed brought you death.'

'Why did your previous alpha kill me? He wanted to be valued and called the justice, isn't that greed?' questioned the late princess in an annoyed tone.

'Princess, please. Let go if them, give up on your revenge and rest in heaven' these words really made the late princess lose temper.

'GET OUT, NOW!' yelled the late princess.

The alpha turned his large frame towards us and asked 'You both have no idea what you are trying to do.'

'Please leave. You are equally responsible for murdering our mother' blurs out Jessica.

'I convey my heartfelt apologies for the choices of the previous alpha but bringing someone from the dead is never a good thing' says the alpha, with warning in every word.

'Its our decision!' I say and continue 'we just have to chant some verses and making a blood promise to our own mother is not that hard.'

'Those verses are capable of death. Not anyone can chant them all in one go. Its dangerous and should never be tried' says the alpha.

'Why do you care? Didn't you what us to leave anyway?' asks Jessica in a hoarse voice staring into the alpha's large eyes.

'I didn't what you to stay because I feared this day would arrive. Please rethink you decision, and let's leave. We can create a portal for the two of you to return and then forget everything that occured here and live your life' says the alpha in a worried tone.

'Live our life? We never had a life, infact we never knew we were twins until a day ago. I never knew I had a family and when I did, I found that my parents weren't dead but instead I was unwanted by my father since birth and lived in a sick orphanage all my life' I burst out and Jessica continues 'Dad never cared about me and I always blamed mother for abandoning me but how could I blame her, when she was herself abandoned and murdered by you people's wickedness?' the alpha and the late princess looked at us in a shock.

'My little ones, I cannot imagine the amount of hardship the two of you faced all alone. Battling day in and day out. We definitely need to avenge for it.' says the late princess in a grim voice.

'No amount of condolences can compensate the suffering you both have faced all these years but I don't want you to suffer any further and so I request you to return to your planet without getting involved with the affairs here.' pleases the alpha through our heads.

I look at Jessica, who nods her head horizontally with heavy eyes, I smile at her and turn to the alpha and speak. 'No amount of suffering is worth not meeting the mother who remembered us in her last and inspite of going insane.'

'Did you head them? Now get going!' says the late princess in a fury.

'I cannot let history repeat' says the alpha and turns to his pack for a brief second before 2 wolves started to rush towards Jessica and me. They had the predator look in their eyes and we had no choice but to run for our life. We moved few steps back when the late princess interfered and attacked the wolves to protect us.

'Let them make their own choices' she said and hit one of the wolf that was aiming at me hard enough, that it flew to the corridor with a howl and hit a metal. On seeing this, the second wolf that was approaching Jessica turned to look at the alpha before withdrawing from the attack.

This annoyed the alpha who moved forward and sprang on the late princess after chanting a verse. The verse was in a language I definitely couldn't understand just like the verse I and Jessica were asked to get familiar with.

'Wonderful, lowly creature. You memorized a verse from the forbidden book just to hurt me.' Laughed the late princess and ducked from the attack. 'I won't let you succeed this time' saying so, the late princess started chanting some strange verse from the forbidden book probably and instantly the alpha reacts like someone is sucking the air from his system. He was choking and gasping for air; the sight was so saddening to see an animal suffer. Jessica turned ber gaze to avoid seeing this scene. A minute later the late princess stoped and said 'I'm sure you don't want to die in here. Get going and never mess in ny business again'

The wolf pack supported the alpha out of the palace. His only words in our head were 'Please, don't do it'

'Let's get started now my children, says the late princess and asks if we are familiar with the verse completely.

We try it a few times again and inform her that we are ready. I notice that Jessica was absent-minded, maybe she was having second thoughts. I nudge her with my elbow and raise my eyebrows gesturing 'what?'. She signed 'nothing' with a fake smile.

Just then the late princess called out to us from the reading quarters saying everything was prepared.

The reading quarters as expected was filled with racks of books that went till the roof. There were two beanbags and a side table in the middle that held an empty glass bowl with flower pattern carved in it.

'Shall we begin?' She asked and we nod our head.

'Consume this before we start' saying so, the late princess hands us each with a small pot that held a small amount of the portion she was brewing earlier next to the window.

'What is this?' I ask and jessica looks up for an answer.

'This will give you the strength to chant the forbidden verses'

'How many times should we chant it?'asks Jessica.

'Until you lose consciousness' says the late princess.

'Did mother undergo this too?' I ask

'No, Fiona had a lighter verse since we both were among the living.' says the late princess and that explains most of the part to us.

We sat on the beanbag while the late princess stood by our side, we nod at each other and drink it in a single gulp; it tasted like water - no taste but had a strong scent of some unknown herbs and was brownish in shade, there was no after taste too.

The late princess takes out the syringes and releases the blood into the glass bowl. She looks at us and asks us to cut our palm and let the blood flow into the same bowl that already held our blood. We feel uneasy but still do it. We cut our palm with the blade she provided and held out our bleeding palm into the bowl and hold each others hand so the blood drops in the bowl as one - like it was from the same person. A drop of blood falls into the bowl making circles and a loud noise.

'Read it now' says the Late princess and we obey.

We read the verses profoundly but the pain felt in our arm was stronger and it hurted real bad. I could feel my mouth unwilling to open and chant the verse but I tried to continue as did Jessica. Somewhere distinctly I heard that the late princess was chanting some verses as well. I could no longer resist and felt myself drift away. I could feel the firm hold from Jessica's hand loosen. Was she the same as me? In no time I heard someone fall onto the ground from the beanbag and I felt the pain next. 'It must have been me or maybe both of us fainted' , I thought to myself.

As I felt myself drift between consciousness, the last thing I asked myself was 'Is all this really worth it?'
