The Mage's Heart
We kicked off our boots and waded in fully dressed, drinking deeply before sinking into the coolness with appreciation.
“We’ll camp here tonight,” Rivyn decided, floating on his back. “Tomorrow we have to make our way up the mountain.” He righted himself suddenly in the water, his head tilted back as he frowned. “Surely not.”
I followed his gaze and found the familiar gathering of birds circling in the sky. “The mages?” I asked him.
“Incenthema,” he snarled suddenly, and the circling birds screeched as they caught alight, burning with such ferocity that their feathers turned to ash, and all that remained was smoke and the slow fall of black dust.
