Everyone, especially the girls, held their breath, waiting for Kevin to say yes. Kevin let out a sigh in defeat and muttered, "Only for you." "Yes!" Everyone cheered. A big smile formed in the corner of my lips. Zayra immediately called the waiters to bring the birthday cake. I was awestruck when I saw how lavish the cake looked. It was a cake with two layers. One part was made of the color black, and the other was red. The combination of black and red looked amazing. I saw the line written on the cake.

Inside the canopy, a long table was laden with an assortment of colorful cupcakes, a towering ice cream sundae, and a magnificent birthday cake adorned with fondant shapes of cars and planes. Kael, resplendent in a bright blue shirt and matching party hat, beamed with excitement as he greeted his friends. There were only five of them, but Kael didn't seem to mind. The cake is a black and gold two tier with caramel popcorn, macarons, chocolate drip, and a custom cake topper with Happy twentieth birthday boldly on it. What more can I ask for?

Dominic said that the staff could bake, but I wanted to do it myself. Between the three of us, we had managed a lopsided but respectable cake. Chocolate layers with more chocolate frosting between. It is really enormous, towering four tiers high– each layer is decorated with miniature, edible models of planets, along with a little astronaut climbing up the side.

The wedding is five days away. While I know our wedding cake is going to be a cannoli cake with cream cheese frosting and pretty chocolate designs that will be dusted in gold. I might know what our wedding cake looks like, but trying to confirm what topper to go on the cake is a whole other story. The three of us agreed to come out in a poly relationship at the reception. So, I want the cake topper to resemble that. I find it ridiculous that I can’t decide on a damn cake topper from the catalog in front of me.

“I know. That’s why I had to pre-complain. Set the stage.” She laughs again and reaches for a small box on the table. “Okay, help me decide. Cake topper or no cake topper?” I peer into the box. The topper is simple—black and gold, just Happy Birthday in cursive. Classy. Understated. Very Gio. “Topper,” I say immediately. “He’ll pretend he doesn’t care and then stare at it for five full minutes.” “Exactly what I thought.” She grins, pleased, and sets it aside.

The bar was in the other corner of the room and it seemed like the bartenders stayed busy. Appetizers and dinner had been superb. Chef Alex and his staff had done a wonderful job. Selena made a mental note to thank them tomorrow. The round four tier wedding cake was made by Jay Fronc, one of the most popular French caterers in New York. Each tier was a different flavor; at the base was vanilla, the second tier was marble, the third tear was chocolate, and the top tier was vanilla. The base icing was white with small red icing roses and green icing as leaves around the edges of each tier. The topper on the cake was a burst of real red and white roses.
