Aria didn't argue in front of the elders, but later, upstairs, she grumbled to Kane that the baby was far from considerate—it had been making her miserable for months.
"You're Rita?" Kane squinted, managing to make out the woman's outline.
She looked to be around forty, dark-skinned with freckles, tall and lean, her curly hair neatly done. She gave off an air of tidiness.
Seeing his stern face, Rita's nerves tightened, but she nodded. "Yes, sir."
Kane's tone was cool, edged with warning. "Anyone who stays here must be loyal. Understand?"
Catching the weight behind his words, Rita quickly nodded again.
