“One out of three.” Fuck. I let my eyes skim over the first page and go through the basic introduction to the content of the book. My love for anything on paper kicks in soon enough and I let myself get drawn into the pages. The book provides information starting from the beginning of a certain year and goes on detailing the events that took place in that year and the next ten before beginning the next chapter. I read of powerless Kings and magical queens. Political upheavals and the line of Ashryn the Great.

Just then, a small head peeked through the suffocating smoke. “Madam, do you need any help?” someone asked timidly. I forced my eyes open and saw a young boy who was about the same age as my son. He was covered in ash and dirt, but his eyes shone brightly through the smoke. He was so small in size, yet he managed to muster the strength to help me up. Then, together, we slowly made our way outside. The path to the outside was incredibly challenging, and I felt like giving up several times.

As they dragged me through the palace halls, people stared, some whispered. “She wasn’t in the palace last night.” “She’s just coming in now.” “She must’ve tried to escape.” I kept my head down. When we reached the king’s chambers, Madam Hilda spoke first. “My lord, Ashley, was missing last night. She just returned now, looking like this.” Her voice was filled with anger. Everyone turned to me. I forced myself to speak. “I went for a walk… and… I fell asleep.” There was silence. Then I added, “When I woke up, my clothes… were gone.”

Just towards the end of the lesson, Mrs Jones noticed that Ashley wasn't concentrating. "Ashley" She called gently but Ashley had totally spaced out. She was oblivious of her environment and her eyes were no longer focused. In her imagination, a man yelled, "You will no longer leave this place and that's final!" And then, there she was in a green robe and a silver crown on her head, crying like a baby. "Father...." "Ashely" Mrs Jones called again, snapping her fingers in Ashley's face. "Huh?" Ashley snapped out of her imagination. Balls of sweats trickled down her face and she quickly wiped it off with her handkerchief.

Ash, however, just gripped the recorder under his sweater as he stared at the queen with a deathly calm gaze. This was a surprise for him. In a situation like this, Ash expected he would be the one on the front line, protecting his siblings and friends. But he supposed if everyone were tense and uptight due to the confrontation, there should be at least someone who'll remain calm to control the situation and converse with the queen.
