And the broken crown. I stared at the final symbol. “Father.” Alaric didn’t answer. “Who is the last king?” His eyes remained fixed on the tree. “The first king.” My stomach tightened. “The first Alpha King?” “No.” His voice became quieter. “The king who ruled before the werewolf kingdoms were divided.” Cassian stepped closer. “What was his name?” Alaric looked at him. “King Malachi.” Cassian frowned. “That name doesn’t exist in our records.”

Noah whispered, “Ace?” “Stay where you are.” Something beeped. Once. Twice. Then every computer screen in the office switched on. A message appeared across all of them. YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE PAST BURIED !!! Noah’s blood ran cold and immediately had a cold feet Ace stepped toward the nearest computer. Another message appeared. NOW THE KINGDOM WILL FALL. Then the screens went black. For several seconds, neither man spoke. Finally Noah whispered, “I officially hate tonight.” Ace pulled out his phone.

“Logan is smart, I’ll give him that. But delusional, too. The Kings? Does he really think they give a damn about anyone?” He waved his hand as if brushing away a bad investment. “They’re wealthy bastards, indifferent and ruthless to everyone. They’re not the kind of people you ever want to owe a favor. Because when they come to collect, they’ll take something you care about most. And the worst part? You won’t be able to do a damn thing about it.” His words didn’t surprise me, I’d heard plenty about the Kings from all kinds of people lately. But the next ones did.

I thought that with phoenix back, I could protect the pack without thinking of the decision-making aspect. Darted worriedly. What if I fail to make a good decision in the near future. I might've proven myself worthy of the position, but I could also prove myself unworthy with any slight mistake. Besides, I had never been a ruler before, I had no idea how it was being one. I was practically just following my instincts for now, but the more I sat down to think about it, the more worried I became.

“You could try, sweetheart, but I think you’ll want to hear what I have to say first.” Blair’s growl deepened, but I held up a hand, signaling her to wait. She is already angry all her decisions won’t make sense. “Talk.” I said, my voice hard. The rogue’s smirk faltered for a moment, replaced by something darker more calculating. “The Alpha Kings.” He began, his tone sharp. “You think you’ve got them under control? That they’re the only threat you need to worry about?” Blair snorted, stepping up beside me. “And you’re saying you’re a threat? Please. I’ve taken down bigger egos than yours before breakfast.”

I said, grabbing the results tightly into my hands. I went back to the packhouse feeling very weak and on the verge of tears. I had thought I’d rid myself of everything that had to do with the twins, but instead I was carrying their child! My aunt barged into my room to let me know some important news. The Twin Alphas were coming over to seal an alliance they had tried forming years ago with her father. I had begged my aunt to let the Alpha handle this meeting, but my aunt shook her head, telling me the Alpha had traveled for an important meeting.

I know why the taskmaster hates me, and I’ll try to keep it brief. The Werewolf Kingdom is divided into four separate Kingdoms and each of these Kingdoms is ruled by a King. The Northern Kingdom is ruled by King Arnold while his brother King Ethan rules the Eastern Kingdom under which our pack, The Moonshine Pack is a part. The Southern Kingdom is ruled by King Hunter, and the Western Kingdom is ruled by King Garner. Well, back to the topic at hand, the reason the taskmaster hates me is because the King of the Eastern Kingdom is my mate.

I looked away because it felt like I would die from heartache if I had to continue watching him get tortured, and if I die, then what was the use of Hunter’s sacrifice? The man let out a bitter scoff as he turned back to look at me, all rage and fury in his eyes. “We are the Blood Anarchy, and we’ve come together to teach monarchies who think they are better than others. Soon their reign will end.” Oh, goddess. What does he mean by ‘end’? He… he can’t kill Hunter. He can’t! – King Hunter Beowulf – I stayed chained on the ground, my blood dripping from everywhere, and my body getting weaker with every punch and every kick.

I say, still confused because I always thought kings and Alphas had absolute power and authority over everything they govern. He takes my hand and flips it over, tracing the lines on my palm. “Think of us as three raging rivers who split into different streams and lakes; we cannot control everything that gets put into those waters, can we?” he says. “Lakes branch into smaller streams, and some even lead to a wider ocean, while others dry up. Kings may have the final word, but we do not control those things we cannot see or perceive.” “Ah, that makes sense,” I say as an uneasy feeling coils in my belly. “So those smaller streams might have enjoyed the killing too much?”

When he frowned and did not speak I continued. “Alpha Kings, as defined by others, are conquerors. They take a pack, either through marriage or force. They are Kings because in general –,” “Kings rule over a country and usually inherit his position,” DK whispered. “Exactly,” I said nodding. “We both didn’t fight to be the Alpha of the pack, we inherited them from our parents.” DK nodded asking me to go on. “Now, again, Kings in general are conquerors, hence, the bigger their land–,”
