“We can’t,” she whispered, her voice trembling, stepping back. “Not like this.”
Kai’s hands dropped, his breath ragged, guilt raw. “Gianna, I—”
She shook her head, her voice strained. “Don’t. We’re a mess.”
The silence was a chasm, their kiss a wound and a wonder. Kai’s phone buzzed, Marsh’s voice cutting through. “Boss, Syndicate’s hitting a Moretti club—Velvet Thorn, two hours. Big one.”
