We continued to move, slower now, but I refused to let Evan catch up. As we ran on the labyrinthine paths, my mind raced with memories of Ryan—the real Ryan. When it seems the kids have finally ran out of their energy from their sugar rush and settled on lying down on the bean bags scattered around the area, I see Zane coming over to me. His face is tinted red and he has beads of sweats all over, but still, he looks as handsome as day one and no matter what, my heart skips a beat at the sight of him. “Goddess, for somebody who’s been trained to fight for hours, I can’t believe running after kids has gotten me more tired.” He confessed breathlessly. “Lay down next to your sweetheart and recharge, Mr. Frost.” Keira teased before standing up from her seat and patting the now empty spot next to me.

"It's you being brave!" My chest tightened. "It's beautiful, sweetheart." "Uncle Jack says you're the bravest rider he knows. He says you can outrun anything." If only that were true. Later that evening, after Eli had fallen asleep curled between Sable and Big Mike during movie night, I finally made it to my room to check the package Tommy had mentioned. It was small, unmarked, with no return address. Inside was a burner phone and a single message: "They're moving north. Time to run again. - A friend."

Liora watched the scene, the surreal tenderness of it—this man who had commanded armies, kneeling in wet grass to teach a child how to catch the sky. “Ready?” he asked. Wren nodded furiously. “Then go.” She ran, legs pumping, string unspooling behind her. The kite wobbled, caught the wind, then dipped dangerously. Wren squealed, glancing back. “Keep going!” Varian called. His voice, usually a blade, carried something almost like laughter. The kite lurched, then suddenly lifted, soaring up in a sharp climb. The red cloth cut against the gray, bright as flame against ash. Wren screamed with joy, nearly tripping as she watched it rise.

We could pretend the three-thorn wax was a prank and not a signature. A runner smashes that hope the way runners are hired to. He’s new, too long in the legs for his own brakes, cap askew, breath sawing like he sprinted uphill without permission. He remembers to bow at the threshold, even so, and that saves him from Mara’s soft wrath.

I was ready. I had spent months training for this moment and I was ready. The annual Grand Hunt had finally come for this year. Until now, I couldn’t be a part of the festivities because I was too young. The age for eligibility to participate was 24. This year, it was finally my year. I’d been training since before I even qualified. I would do it; I would win. For my family. I had to. I would restore my family name if it was the last thing I’d do.

I nodded to Xavier, he had every right to hate me, and if that made him feel better, then I would take it. I closed my eyes as he raised the knife and waited for him to plunge it deep into my chest.
