Liora watched the scene, the surreal tenderness of it—this man who had commanded armies, kneeling in wet grass to teach a child how to catch the sky.
“Ready?” he asked.
Wren nodded furiously.
“Then go.”
She ran, legs pumping, string unspooling behind her. The kite wobbled, caught the wind, then dipped dangerously. Wren squealed, glancing back.
“Keep going!” Varian called. His voice, usually a blade, carried something almost like laughter.
The kite lurched, then suddenly lifted, soaring up in a sharp climb. The red cloth cut against the gray, bright as flame against ash. Wren screamed with joy, nearly tripping as she watched it rise.
