The air was thick with tension, and I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, but then he'd gotten a call and headed out—giving room for me to say my last goodbyes to the girls and to talk to his Mum. I knew my alone time was up when I heard three knocks at the door. Daniel walked in still in his dress shirt, but just with the sleeves rolled and a few buttons undone. The Bailey wife follows when we say.” I leaned closer to the phone, though I didn’t speak. Daniel swallowed. “I want Gia outside.” A pause. Then laughter. “Fine. You’ll see her.” The call ended. Daniel looked at us, terrified. Althea looked at me. I could feel the fear in her hand, but her voice was steady when she asked, “Did it work?”
