I set the bowl on the table and start shuffling through the compact disks for a horror movie. The Nun. Yes, I'll settle on that one. Before I start to watch, I quickly draw the curtains and sink on the couch. Then I press PLAY. Some few minutes into the movie, I hear a knock on the door. I swear I scream. I felt so frightened. This movie is really scary. Scarier than I thought. I hear the knock again then I realize it's a human knock. I open the door and I'm met with the lovebirds of the year: Troy and Jenna.

“Didn’t think we’d see another Hayes girl back here.” I smiled. “Just for a while.” I noticed the black sedan parked across the street that night. Didn’t think much of it—until it showed up again the next day. Same plates. One thunderstorm later, the power cut out. A transformer somewhere gave up the ghost. The whole building sighed into darkness. I lit candles and curled up on the couch, rubbing the curve of my belly—still subtle, but present. Like a secret learning to speak. Then came the knock.

I chuckled and turned to him and asked, "Don't you know that there's different horror movies?" "How?" I punched his shoulder and turned on the television and went to the movies in the playlist and asked, "What do you wanna see?" And looked at him. "What about some haunted death consequences? It sounds a little scarier than others." I laughed and said, "Okay." I opened the list of movies related to that and asked him again, "From this list, what do you like to watch?"
