LAMIA Ten minutes later, the four of us, I had grabbed Kira on the way, sat in my room. Mike and Kel were looking a little more than awkward. I assumed they thought we were going to have a “talk” about what happened Friday night. “Here,” I said and tossed the old leather book to Kellen who was propped on the end of my bed, “Turn to page 123. And read it out loud so everyone can hear.” He flipped the pages until he came to the right one and then began to read aloud the same passage I had read. There was an eerie silence in the room when he had finished until Mike broke it.

Twaine's Point of View : I just got home from school when I caught up with Kyle who looked troubled. He was staring at his laptop while his forehead was furrowed. He seems to have a problem. I laid down on the mini table here in my room the three books I had brought from school. I also hung my handbag on my hanger before I took off my uniform and dressed for home.

“No. But I could have been.” Liam frowned, his thought skipping. “What’s that supposed to mean?” But Kyle didn’t answer the question. He just stared out over the calm body of water, his reflection rippling under the pale moonlight. “You remind me of my past self,” he said instead, his tone quieter now, more serious. “All that anger. All that fire with nowhere to go.” “I’m not like you,” Liam snapped. “I’m not a jerk.” Kyle’s chuckle was low, almost amused. “Look in the mirror, kid. You think I didn’t hear how you talked to your mom earlier? You were as much of a jerk as I’ve ever been.”

He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.We talked all the way home, and I carried his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes. We hung all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him.Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.

I can't interfere with the pack, so he is happy—pompous prick. Kyle and I have been reading books. I make sure to point out talking points that prove Graham and his dad are wrong when it comes to keeping our blood as pure as possible. I make sure to tell him about how important it is to follow your inner animal. He is young, so he doesn't get it. But it makes me feel better to know I told him the truth.

Kyle went straight to work. We found the chest exactly where I had seen it before. Kyle quickly cracked the code and opened the chest. We searched through it and finally found the book we were looking for. The book that I have mentioned. "That's it !" I said with confidence. " Okay!" Kyle said. As we flipped through the pages, we found diagrams, notes, and sketches that all seemed to be related to our parents' death. My heart raced as I read through the information, feeling closer than ever to the truth.

I snapped. I reached into my bag, pulled out one of the thick storybooks I'd packed for Remus, and tossed it at Kyle. "Read this until you're fluent then I'll start you on something harder." "Ugh," Kyle pulled a face. "I'm going to check if you can later!" "Fine fine!" he huffed, burying his nose in the book. I leaned back, Remus stirring softly against me, eyes scanning the train car, the windows, the shadows between luxury and complacency.
