I breathed out slowly, feeling something I had been holding for months begin to release - not pleasantly, not in relief, but in the necessary way that things release when they have been held past their time.
"Then this is the last conversation," I said.
"Yes."
I felt the old impulse rise in me - toward persuasion, toward the search for one more angle, one more phrase placed at the right moment that might shift the outcome. I felt it rise and I let it go. Just let it go. It had nowhere to go anymore.
