I found a spot on the far side of the room, near the bookshelf, close enough to be part of the gathering without actually having to be in the middle of it, and I spent the first twenty minutes nursing a glass of water and pretending to be fascinated by the spines of Nate's paperbacks while I tried to figure out how to survive an entire evening in the same room as Eli without either of us saying a single wrong word.
Jordan came over first, dropping into the chair beside me with the easy warmth he'd always had, even now, even exhausted, even carrying more than any one person should have to carry.
