I clutched my stomach as I bent over, laughing until tears streamed down my face. “Is it such an amusing idea?” Koa asked. I raised my head in time to see his face contort with a weird expression and it only fueled my laughter. I laughed loud and long. It took several minutes to get me to calm down and when I did, I wanted to laugh some more. “I never thought of myself as a joker.” Koa gazed at me with a stoic expression.

I said flatly, each word clipped. For a moment his expression faltered, a slip, a crack in the performance but then he barked out laughter far too loud for the joke that hadn’t been told. He waved me off with his free hand, eyes darting quickly around to the watching crowd. “Ah, you joke! Always the joker.” I stepped back, shaking him off, my skin crawling where his arm had rested. My eyes swept the room again.
