Lauren descended the grand staircase on the far side of the ballroom like a ghost in a blood-red gown. For one brief second, before she lifted her mask into place, I caught a clear glimpse of her face—pale, eyes hollow with something unhinged, lips pressed into a thin line.
“I need to use the restroom,” I whispered to Reese, squeezing his hand once.
He frowned behind his mask. “Now?”
