“Yes, Beta.” The last of the spies fell into the dust with a collective thud, and Layla straightened. There were way more spies than she had even expected. All of them had charged at her, yelling “Long live the Lycans!” even though they probably knew that they could not stand a chance against her. They seemed to want to die, than go back to Ghost as a failure. Layla huffed, it was a stupid, but wise choice. Ghost would probably flay their skin alive, for getting found out.

The drive to Black Water took almost three hours and Layla, having had only two hours sleep, drifted in and out of sleep while Gray sat beside her typing on his laptop. They had barely spoken for most of the trip after he had tried to make conversation but she had made it clear that she wasn’t in the mood for small talk. He glanced surreptitiously at her now, wondering what on earth Blake was up to sending his only daughter as a peace offering to his archenemy. The girl was barely eighteen and looked like a stiff breeze would blow her over and yet, she had a steely resolve and conviction, that made her stronger than she looked.

He stepped toward me with his hand reaching for my face. “Your eyes are a rare azure blue and stormy silver. Like a gem. It must be hard to go around with eyes like those, and hair with that tint in it.” He grabbed a strand of my hair, and looked at it. His face was in awe, but also had a hint of wonder. What was he thinking? “My name is Layla. What is yours?” I asked again, trying to get an answer. He was still looking at my hair. “Theodore..” He dropped my hair, and stepped back.

She leaned her head on my shoulder, whispering, “We’ll be here. Every step. You’re not alone.” I exhaled slowly. Her presence steadied me, soothed the edge without dulling it. I tightened my jaw. “I know.” Layla stepped closer, scanning the room one last time. “I’ll prepare the gear. Cameras, entry points, distractions. Everything has to be precise. No improvisation.” I nodded. “Good. That’s what we do. We plan, we wait, we strike. And this time… it works. We don’t fail.”
