Scars littered his skin, proof of his fight to rise to the top. I wondered how he earned some of them, particularly the scar that spread from his left peck to his hip line in a clean diagonal.

I admitted. Lamia scooted sideways and propped her legs up over mine. The shorts she was wearing rode up and I could see the deep scars from her first fight with a rogue bear. It seemed like that was the beginning of everything. “I have a scar like that too.” And lifted up the leg of my shorts to show her the marred skin where the Lion had left his claw marks on me that last day in the arena.

He leaned forward and pointed to the jagged scar left by the exit wound. Next, he pointed to a series of scars in a crescent along his left forearm. “This was a bite mark,” he explained, turning his arm over to show the matching scars on the other side. “From a rather nasty lizard, the sort that might think of Sasha as a snack. I was lucky to live, or perhaps not, given the months I spent in a medical facility fighting off the infection.” It was a gross oversimplification of what had occurred, but it was close enough for now.
