My limbs are shaking badly, and my feet are on fire from running in heels. I hear one shout to the other about doubling back; knowing he will come this way only sends me into a terror fuelled frenzy. I start frantically looking around for somewhere else to go. They are too close, and I’m too exposed. I have nothing to defend myself with and everything in me is shaking and stammering with dread and I need to get away.

I excused myself and went to the kitchen with some lame excuse, I didn't want them to notice my weird behavior. I dragged my feet to the sink, I opened the tap and put my shaking hands under the cold water. 'Everything is fine' I kept chanting to myself. The air felt heavy, thick, like I was breathing through smoke. Teal stirred faintly, but I couldn’t focus anymore. My heartbeat raced out of rhythm. Something was wrong. The warmth turned to heat. My whole body started shaking, uncontrollably. I pressed my palm to the floor, trying to steady myself, but the tremor wouldn’t stop.

I needed to get away fast. I didn’t stop walking fast until I reached my chambers. The moment the door shut behind me, the control I’d been clinging to shattered. My hands started shaking—hard, uncontrollable tremors that ran up my arms. My entire body vibrated, teeth chattering as terror finally caught up with me, raw and overwhelming. I pressed my back against the door, sliding down slowly, breathing shallow, uneven breaths.

Instead, her eyes were staring blankly at the ceiling. Then suddenly, her body began to shake in a funny way. At first, it was a small twitch in her shoulders, then her whole body started to jerk and shake, fast and it looked liek she had no control over it. “Mum?” I said, tapping her. “Mum, what’s wrong? Are you okay?” I tried to calm her down, placing my other hand over hers but her bony fingers were wrapped so tightly around mine that it hurt. I tried to pull away, but it was no use because her grip didn’t loosen.

I slid my legs over the side of the mattress. That was when she started shaking. At first I thought she was cold. Her shoulders twitched once, twice. Then the tremors spread—arms, legs, whole body jerking like someone had flipped a switch and sent electricity through her. Her teeth clicked together hard enough I heard it across the bed. “Sharon?” No response. The shaking turned violent. Her head snapped back, spine arching off the mattress. A low, guttural sound tore out of her throat—not a scream, more like something trapped trying to claw free.
