There was still no sign of Claire.
"Mr. Worthington, you should go back. It's too dangerous here."
Sam said nothing. He simply pulled a photo from his backpack.
It was Claire at twenty, standing beneath a cherry blossom tree, smiling radiantly.
"I'll find her," he said. "If she's alive, I'll see her in person. If she's dead... I want to see her body."
In the warzone, dusk always came without warning. The sky burned a smoky crimson, stained by gunpowder and ash. From a distance, scattered gunfire echoed faintly, a cruel reminder of the land's unrest.
