“You’re both standing here, frozen, while it circles closer. What makes you think you can negotiate with something that doesn’t understand words?”
I took a shaky breath, my own courage kindling despite the fear. “Then we fight. Together.”
Arden stiffened. “No,” he said immediately. “You—stay behind me. I fight. You don’t—”
“I’m not hiding,” I said firmly, surprising even myself. “Not while it’s out there. Not while it thinks it owns me.”
He hesitated, conflicted, as if deciding whether to argue or trust me. Finally, he lowered his stance slightly. “Fine. But you follow exactly what I say. Move, speak, breathe only when I give the signal. Understood?”
