The proto-molecule stuff leans more into cosmic horror, and a lot of the conflict is old-school naval maneuvering in space, which can feel a bit slow. I almost put it down during the early political wrangling on Ceres.

But the character dynamic between Holden and Miller is what sold me. Their clashing perspectives – the idealist versus the burnt-out cynic – ground the weirdness in something really human. It’s less about the physics and more about how people react when the rules of reality start to bend. By the time the Rocinante crew really gels, I was completely hooked on their found-family vibe.

The series does get more expansive and politically complex later on, but this first book sets a tone that’s more detective noir meets disaster movie in space. Worth it for that blend, but maybe not if you’re strictly after something like 'The Martian'.
