Eli shuts his eyes, breath shuddering— But the door at the far end of the room SLAMS open. Hard. Metal against metal. Violent. Final. The stranger freezes. Slowly turns. Her back arched off the metal surface, her mouth opening in a silent cry as her eyes rolled back—white, glowing faintly. Her fingertips sparked with light. Darian’s voice dropped. “It’s beginning.” Aarin’s heart lurched. “No—no, no—Alina—stay with me!” A crack split the air—like the sound of a massive door unlocking somewhere far away. The lights in the room flickered one last time and died. Darkness swallowed them. Not normal darkness. Living darkness. Twisting. Breathing. Watching. “Aarin…” Alina’s voice drifted out—small, terrified, and echoing as if far away. “I… I can’t stop it…”

I turned toward the fight room, Korra’s room, but his voice stopped me. “I slept in my room today.” I changed direction immediately. His door was wide open, the room dark. The moment I stepped inside, the lights came on. Horris was seated on a chair in the corner, his body still, his face tilted upward, staring at the ceiling. I stopped cold. So he really did not see me outside before he told me to come in? The thought settled uneasily in my chest. I knew Horris was mysterious, but every time I thought I had reached the limit of what I could accept, he did something even stranger.

I believed him back then. I slid the key in and turned it slowly. The lock clicked. I pushed the heavy door open carefully and stepped inside. The room was dark. Really dark. The air smelled strange. Like strong chemicals and blood, that turned my stomach. I turned on the flashlight on my phone. The light shook in my hand when everything came into view.

Because she believed love was supposed to mean something. Megan glanced at the phone propped on the nightstand. “Simon… we’re still live.” ‘Live.’ Marilyn’s stomach dropped. The phone screen showed a red recording light and scrolling comments from strangers. They were streaming this. People were watching. Simon rolled his eyes. “Relax. She’ll leave. She always does.” Something inside Marilyn finally snapped. She straightened her shoulders, refusing to cry in front of these immoral people. “You’re disgusting,” she said quietly.

As the words fell, he raised a hand to signal his bodyguards to seize me, and several muzzles edged a step closer, trained on my skull. Karina stood to the side, satisfaction written on her face. Eli stood at the door of the box across the way, an indescribable panic churning in his eyes. My hand tightened slightly around the gun, and just as I made to raise it and strike back, every light in the entire castle went out at once. Only a single cold-white spotlight above the auction stage rose slowly to life, falling on the main entrance to the hall. A tall, upright silhouette walked in at an unhurried pace.

I don't want to get stuck in this empty dark room. I heard someone opening the door in a snap and walking inside. I could not see the person in dark. I carefully took a step ahead, walking without making any noise. Suddenly a strong pair of arms trapped me in a cage, before I could scream a hand came over my mouth while the other hand kept holding me tightly. The more I tried to wiggle the more his grip became strong and tighter.
