I spat, stepping forward into the light of the valley. The woman turned. Her eyes were not emerald or crimson; they were a solid, unblinking gold, like coins reflecting the sun. She looked at me with a pitying smile that made my skin crawl. "Greetings, Darlene," the woman said, her voice a melodic harmony that lacked any trace of the fire's crackle. "I am Elara.
