Two Strangers

June was still rooted where she stood staring at Drake. She still didn't believe that Drake was her boss now. Her brain began to freeze, her ears suddenly became deaf, she barely heard what Drake was saying. She is still trying to digest the reality in front of her. If Drake was her boss, how could she get revenge?

“June? Hey! June Hanson! ”

Drake called out June while waving his hand because June seemed to be disappearing into another realm. June suddenly realized that she couldn't stay this way. Drake doesn't seem to remember June at all, so June decides to pretend she doesn't know Drake either.

"Ah, yes sir. I'll make coffee. Do you like something sweet or just black coffee?" June asked.

“Milk coffee with a little sugar. After that, prepare notes. This afternoon we have an important meeting,” he said, looking straight at his laptop screen.

"Okay, sir," June said, faking a smile. She tried to be as professional as possible. Quickly, June turned toward the outside of the room. She didn't even know where to make coffee, but she would find out soon after. Carrying her bag, June came out of the room and looked left and right, looking for someone she could ask. She didn't even know where her desk was, but now hse had to make coffee first.

Everyone looks busy, walking around quickly, or focused in front of their computers.

"Excuse me ..."

"Eh, excuse me ... I ..."

No one heeded June's words, until finally June decided to meet Anne, the receptionist who also looked busy, picked up the phone that was ringing continuously. When she saw June, Anne just glanced as if asking what she wanted to say, while picking up and answering the phone.

“The Burton Group, good morning. What can I help you with?" she said, greeting the caller.

"Where's the pantry? I want to make coffee, ”June whispered, hoping that Anne could read her mouth.

"Oh let me connect you. Wait a minute,” she said. She then dialed a few numbers on her phone.

"Straight from here, the pantry is on the left," she said quickly, hanging up the phone. The phone then rings again.

"Thank you," June said. Anne just nodded and waved as she picked up the next phone.

June walked in the direction Anne indicated and finally found her pantry. June was looking for a nice drinking cup, coffee, sugar, and warm water. Everything is available in the pantry. It seems today's first task will run smoothly. With her experience as a secretary of the director for many years, making coffee is a very easy subject.

After she finished making coffee, June immediately took a pretty good tray and brought it back to Drake's room while carrying her bag. She walked carefully then pressed the bell button like Anne had done earlier.

"Who’s there?"

"June, sir."

Suddenly the door lock opened, June opened the door with one hand and went inside. The man didn't see June at all. His eyes focus on the newspapers and laptops in front of him. June put his coffee on the table and stood in front of Drake.

"Sit down and take your notes," Drake said as he continued typing.

"Have this data ready," said Drake, turning his laptop over.

He explained what data June had to process. June noted everything in a notebook she brought from home. Drake asked her to make a presentation slide, to be more precise to complement the existing presentation slides.

"When should this presentation slide be finished, sir?" June asked.

"Two hours to go," Drake replied quickly.

June widened her eyes, failing to cover the look of surprise on her face.

"Why? You can’t do that?"

"I can do that, sir!" June exclaimed quickly.

"Okay, go and do it fast. Then come with me to the meeting," Drake replied.

"Very well, sir," June replied. She immediately stood up and carried her bag and headed out of the room.

"Where are you going?" Drake asked suddenly, stopping June's steps.

"Looking for my desk, sir," June replied honestly. She thought that the empty table in front of the room must have been her desk.

"You work here," Drake replied.

"I beg your pardon?" June was surprised. Drake glanced at a small table in the large study which was equipped with a computer. It's not far from Drake's desk. Why hadn't June seen that desk earlier?

"Is that my desk?" June asked. A second later June regretted it because Drake's eyes were so cold and stern.

"You don’t like it?" he asked in a voice that was no less cold.

"I like it, sir," June replied.

“I don't like my secretary being outside of my room because I like someone who's always ready and close. So I don't need extra energy to call or look for you. Understand?" he asked again.

"Understood, sir," June replied again. In her heart, June cursed, but her lips turned into a smile. This is what June calls professionalism. She then walked quickly but calmly to her desk. Drake's eyes darted after June's footsteps toward her desk. He then snorted. Since this was her first day, Drake was going to leave her asking so many questions like that. Drake took his coffee and blew it then took a slow sip. Great coffee. Drake took another sip then glanced at June. It seemed he had seen her somewhere, but Drake couldn't remember anymore.

June snorted softly in annoyance. Being in the same room all day with her boss, let alone the person she hates the most on earth is the last thing she wants. During her time as a secretary elsewhere, she always got the privacy of her own cubicles. Even though it was small, she can do whatever hse wants, sometimes even taking off her stockings, taking off her high heels occasionally, or like most other workers occasionally looking at social media on her cellphone. At this rate, June should continue to look professional without a moment's pause. No wonder the salary is big, June thought.

June then worked through all the data she had to work on, completing it on Drake's presentation slides as requested. The data was overwhelming and complicated, June had to go through it over and over again and then tidy up the slides to make them look better. June was so immersed in her work that it finally occurred to her that her two hours were running out. She had finished the last slide when suddenly Drake was standing in front of her.

"Already finished?" he asked.

"Yes, sir. I sent it to you as the instructions,” June replied confidently.

Drake then returned to his desk, opening up the work June had emailed to him. Drake examined it closely. June did everything very well, neatly and thoroughly. Drake nodded his head. June's impressive CV doesn't lie, despite the last time she was fired from the previous company. Drake desperately needed a secretary at the time, so he ignored the last fact and accepted June to come to work today.

"June, come here," said Drake.

June walked over to Drake's table and sat across from him.

"Tell me, why was the last time you got fired from your job?" asked Drake to the point. Curiosity tickled his mind. June was a little surprised, her mind wandering the night they were drunk. That's when June was fired from her job.

"As your new boss I deserve to know, right?" he asked again. Those brown eyes stared hard at June, but were a little friendlier. Instantly June's heart skipped a beat, imagining those brown eyes a year ago being so close to her.
