The human side of me or rather the nonhuman side is fighting with the hungry demon which lives inside of me. As disgusting as that might sound to anyone else including me on a normal day, it's exciting a whole lot of my other side. I don't know how long I can hold myself back. "Excuse me." I tear my gaze away from Daniel at the sound of Amelia's voice. She's with her sisters and their presence seems to silence Kevin and his boys.

His hand lifted, hovered just inches from the handle. If he turned it , if he stepped inside there’d be no undoing it. Not this time. He could finish what they started. Bury himself so deep inside that mouth, inside that want, that for a few hours, he wouldn’t have to think about betrayal and bloodlines and wedding vows. He could forget. But the thing about monsters was they followed you, even after the lights went out. And Rafael already knew, no matter how hard he tried to kill this thing between them, it wouldn’t stay buried.

“All of them found on the outskirts. Burnt. But not by sunlight. It wasn’t natural. The smell lingers even after they’re moved. Like scorched flesh and ash soaked into the ground.” Rina made a face. “God.” “And their eyes…” I continued, swallowing, “They don’t rot the way human corpses do. But these… it was like dust had settled deep behind the sockets. Like whatever got to them drained something out of them first.” Rina shivered slightly. “Okay, now I’m definitely sleeping with the light on.” I smirked. “You always do.” She shrugged. “Yeah, but now it’s justified.” I hesitated, then added, “Leonidas offered me a seat on his council. Right after the third body turned up.”

Its eyes burned like molten fire, locked on me. But this time… it wasn’t alone. Figures slithered out from the darkness—dozens of them. Their twisted, nightmarish bodies crawled low to the ground, limbs too long, movements jerky and unnatural. Their guttural hisses sliced through the silence like knives. Lucien’s face hardened. “Shadow monsters.” Caesar’s jaw tightened. “And where there are shadow monsters…” A slow, mocking laugh drifted through the clearing, sending ice through my veins.

“Like it’s not supposed to exist.” Vivienne crouched to examine the ground, her dagger tapping lightly against the cracked stone. “This isn’t natural,” she said. “It’s been warped by something—something powerful.” Crane held up the resonance map, the glowing points shifting erratically across its surface. “The balance is weaker here,” he said, his voice tight with concern. “It’s like the fabric of this place is... unraveling.” Callan stepped forward, their glowing form cutting through the strange light. “This is a liminal space—a boundary between what was and what is. The force is strong here, but so is the balance. We must tread carefully.”

Her heart ached as Elizah turned her gaze out the window. "I’m sure the perpetrator wasn’t Liam. The police caught the wrong person, Julie. I don’t want to live like this. They let the real perpetrator walk free while Liam is imprisoned!" Elizah’s voice was heavy and filled with anger. Julie fully understood her sister’s feelings but could do nothing except try to calm her down. Julie fell silent, recalling something: "monsters." Yes, Elizah screamed "monsters," meaning there was more than one perpetrator. "Monsters. What do you mean by monsters? Did you feel there was more than one person?"

They were calling Lior’s name—a summons that vibrated through the stone foundations. *The witches.* Aziel pulled away, his expression shifting from madness to lethal focus. Lior stood, breathless, the bond humming with a new, terrifying danger that eclipsed everything they had just felt. “I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

He moved with ease, almost like a guide, describing the perils of this wild world and explaining the monsters we encountered, including ghouls, wendigos, and others whose mere names made my skin crawl. I had never seen such creatures before, and their forms and movements were more terrifying than I could have imagined.
