The concrete walls seemed distant and her eyes kept losing focus on the two digital stamps. She tried to hold the image. It slipped through her grasp like water. “You accessed information you were not meant to process,” he said evenly. The hum intensified. Not painful anymore but the sound was still disturbing. Her memories began losing edges.

The crystal activated, and the humiliating images were projected onto the car window again—me, thirteen years ago, bound in silver chains, covered in blood, sobbing in despair... Linda thought. With an air of confidence, Linda strode onto the stage, her chin lifted high. Aurora found it utterly amusing. As soon as Linda plugged her USB drive into the computer and projected the proposal onto the screen, a glint of realization flashed in Aurora’s eyes. Just as expected. So, Linda really did steal her proposal. Aurora showed no obvious reaction—she merely raised an eyebrow, a faint, unreadable smile playing at her lips. It was as if she hadn’t even noticed Linda’s provocative gaze.

The name landed like a stone in still water, sending ripples through the air. “Celeste’s nephew. The one who disappeared after a very public falling-out with the family.”

Holding her body as stiff as a live oak, her voice trembled as she said, T can’t thank you enough for your discretion. Rachel rose from her seat and went to stand beside the other woman. The sunlight, which had seemed so comforting before, dug harsh lines around Linda’s mouth. Her eyes were glassy, tear-filled and desperate, as they focused on everything except Rachel. Rachel followed her line of vision to the enormous diamond solitaire on Linda’s finger. ‘Well, yes, actually, there is a problem. But there doesn’t have to be, not if you keep my secret.
